There are not many secret escapes left in this world – but Villa Grey in Tuscany is definitely one. The 4-star hotel offers the perfect mixture of a relaxed and stylish holiday in one of the most beautiful italian coastal villages.
Forte dei Marmi is a place with traditions and has a sprinkling of old glamour: Gianni Agnelli, the ex boss of Fiat, threw big parties here in the 60s and had a tunnel built to the beach from his property (which is now owned by the hotel Augustus), so as not to have to cross the road to get there. With its famous name, the little town still belongs to the more expensive and chic addresses, especially in summer. However, the strange thing is: There are only a few hotels here, where we would pin the “Pretty Hotels” seal of approval to their door.
The one big exception is the wonderful Villa Grey, which we were allowed to test for a few days at the end of the summer season. The property lies directly on the strand promenade and belongs to a sisterhood, which also owns a neighbouring house.
The hotel only has 19 rooms, of which the loveliest ones are of course those at the front, which look over the ligurian sea and have their own balcony (room 302 for example). You just simply have to imagine it like this: After enjoying a magical 5-star breakfast in the villa’s garden (you get croissants and fresh fruit, chocolates and Torta della Nonna), you take a stroll across the road to the villa’s own beach club, say hello to the staff there with a friendly “Salve”, get led to your cabana with deck chairs , recliners, director’s chair and a small table. You order your second cappuccino of the day, after which you plunge into the lukewarm, wavy water displaying only your swimming trunks and steel chest. For lunch, there is salads and mozzarella with tomatoes served on the beach club’s terrace and in the evening you can pedal on one of the hotel’s bicycles to town for a delicious dinner – or even better – to the small village of Pietrasanta, which is only 10 minutes away and is admired for its beauty by many artists and creative people, including the designer Paul Smith, who a owns house there.
A perfect one week’s holiday at the seaside – also in Off Season.
Double room from 260 euros incl. breakfast, there is an extra charge for the beach cabana.
Forte dei Marmi is located south of Genova and East of Florence. Google maps: https://goo.gl/maps/z5kJP
A helpful hint
The houses at the front of Forte dei Marmi all lie on a quite busy road. Those who prefer a quieter holiday should take a room facing the garden and the mountains.
