Thanks to creative hoteliers such as Ike & Evelyn Ikrath, Bad Gastein has managed to attract new visitors. If you are looking for a time-out with lots of nature and colorful evenings, this is definitely your place to be.
Around ten years ago, the Austrian town of Bad Gastein was considered a “former” vacation village whose glamour times had long since passed. But today, creative hoteliers and entrepreneurs have put the place back on the international map. First and foremost there is the local couple Ike & Evelyn Ikrath, who with Haus Hirt, Miramonte and Alpenlofts have presented new hospitality concepts and attracted a new breed of guest. And with the new (and younger) guests, new entrepreneurs settled in Bad Gastein and opened small B&Bs, boutique hotels, stores and bars.
Last year we had come to Bad Gastein twice and we must admit: This Belle Epoque village always hosts a very exciting mix of creatives, athletes, yogis and mountain-loving families. During the day, people are active, they ride up the peaks with a bike or take part in hiking discoveries. In the evening they eat well and healthy, and later you meet a lot of good people at the bar arguing about – well, the future, new projects and why Bad Gastein will never be the “Berlin of the Alps” (it will thus be a holiday destination of fame). So of course we can always recommend a trip to this jewel of the Salzburger Land mountains. For those who are still looking for the right accommodation, here are our three favorites:
First of all: It’s beautifully located on a hillside. You have this wonderful view into the valley and to the mystic Grand Hotels in the centre of this historical and often magic town.
However the Miramonte is an architectural “Zeitgeist” experiment: It doesn’t really follow the traditional mountain hotel standards and the ubiquitous wooden chalet style is just not present here. Owner and architect Ike Ikrath has managed to turn a typical building from the 70s into a mixture of a cool hideaway and designer hotel.
The rooms are light, modern, not really playful, but somehow very cosy. The corridors are cool, but not cold. The terrace not romantic, but nice and somehow people like to mingle here more often than we have seen it in other hotels. The spa is not pseudo, but somehow real. And the guests not spoilt, but curious to know, just what makes this place so interesting.
We really liked the communal (very delicious) evening dinner on the terrace at the front of the building with a view to the brightly illuminated Bad Gastein. Everyone enjoys his very own Miramonte moment here. Later you gather around the fire for cocktails, or watch a movie on the open air screen – relaxing on one of the sun beds.
People, who don’t necessarily want to follow conventions and don’t mind having creative neighbours during their holiday in the mountains. Seriously, you can spend a whole week in Miramonte, only sitting on the terrace, working on your laptop and enjoy this very much.
Double room from 80 euros per person including breakfast.

Alpine Spa Hotel Haus Hirt
Haus Hirt is one of our favorite hotels ever. Truly: Boss Evelyn has created a unique place. At Haus Hirt you are guaranteed never to be bored. This is due on the one hand to the well-organized activity program (participation is of course voluntary, but highly recommended!), and on the other hand to the positive energy that surrounds the house. This also applies to the excellent food. Apart from that, at Haus Hirt you dine in one of the most beautiful hotel restaurants in the world (just look at the pink walls, it’s fantastic). And in the evenings, you may find yourself talking to a highly decorated writer or visionary at the hotel bar.
There are beautiful guest rooms, some with an amazing view into the valley or to the skyline of Bad Gastein. There`s the In-house restaurant (almost all guests book the 3/4 board), a kids club, indoor swimming pool, terrace with loungers and also an Aveda spa with sauna, steam bath, treatment rooms and anti-stress programs.
Families with children, but also couples who want to experience the unique Haus Hirt Spirit.
Doubles around 140 Euros per person.

The new alpine lofts came into existence in the summer of 2014 on the southern face of the mountain hillside above the Haus Hirt Hotel. A total of six chalets were built, each one with two floors. The well thought through construction form allows the lofts to be divided into two, without the different parties getting in each other’s way. The best part is normally the one on the first floor with a perfect view of the valley.
And we must admit: We have rarely felt so comfortable in such a short time (we were allowed to test the Tessa loft, which is the highest on the hillside). On the one hand this is because of the exposed location, and on the other due to the timber construction. After the first few steps you find yourself walking barefoot through the loft’s corridors, wishing that your stay here could go on longer than planned.
Because each separate building was sold to different private people, these individual owners were allowed to choose their own personal art works and designs. This leads to the fact that the interior decoration of each loft is completely different to the other. Therefore each taste is provided for.
Families, individualists, creative people, architects and lovers of beautiful buildings, who want to spend a relaxing and inspiring time in the mountains. Bad Gastein is worth a visit whether it is summer or winter!
The first floor of the “Tessa” loft with two bedrooms (for four people), is available from e.g. 340.- euros per night (high season 460.- euros per night).
