What a hidden gem. Aarskogs Boutique Hotel was once known as the beloved Smucke Steed and had been a member of this family in the last years. But a few years ago, owners Birte and Dagfinn Aarskog gently renovated the villa and reopened it with a small team as their own boutique hotel.
Set in Glücksburg in Germany’s far north, the property feels like a dream retreat by the sea. A few years ago, owners Birte and Dagfinn Aarskog gently renovated the villa and reopened it with a small team as their own boutique hotel.
The yellow brick house dates back to 1889, when it served as a boarding residence for young women. Walking through its rooms today, one can’t help but feel a touch of envy at how idyllic life here must have been. The house itself is beautiful, but the garden, with its open view toward the sea just a few hundred meters away, may be even more enchanting.
The Hotel
A visit some years ago left a lasting impression: this is a house with unmistakable character. It stands in an established villa neighborhood where German conventionality appears only in passing. Perched on a small hill and framed by tall trees, the hotel offers sweeping views over the valley and the Flensburg Fjord. On clear days even as far as Denmark, just across the narrow waterway.
It’s a place for encounters, quiet conversations and recovery, “a temporary home” for returning guests and staff alike. It reminded us a bit of the classic Scandinavian seaside hotels – Badehotel.
The Rooms
Aarskogs is an intimate breakfast pension with just 16 rooms. Ten individually designed rooms occupy the historic section, including the former library, prayer room and large music room, while six more are located in a 1979 extension. All overlook either the fjord, the open landscape or the garden greenery.
The interiors are bright, airy and simply furnished in a restrained Scandinavian style that feels both modern and calming. Some rooms are compact but pleasantly affordable. The suites and loft, by contrast, are strikingly spacious yet still priced modestly, roughly comparable to the cost of a dinner in Zurich.
A Day at Aarskogs
A summer morning might begin with a gentle run followed by a refreshing swim; Glücksburg’s finest sandy beach lies just minutes away. Back at the hotel, a leisurely late breakfast awaits: homemade sweet and savory spreads, fresh muesli, egg dishes and vitamin shots. The scent of freshly baked rolls, afternoon cake already in the oven and table-served coffee fills the house.
In warm months, doors and windows stay open, and breakfast stretches lazily across the terrace. Newspapers circulate among guests; afterward, many linger – settling into a garden lounger or rocking chair with a book, anticipating afternoon coffee and cake, or perhaps reserving quiet time in the Finnish sauna tucked into the garden house.

The Surroundings
Glücksburg, Germany’s northernmost mainland town, has been a Baltic seaside resort since 1872. Its centerpiece is the moated Glücksburg Castle, once the summer residence of the Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg dynasty and often described as a cradle of Europe’s royal houses.
Echoes of the resort’s late-19th-century grandeur remain: stately shipping magnates’ villas, historic hotels and guesthouses that once hosted nobility and their entourages. Yet the town retains an unpretentious authenticity. The beach is particularly appealing, with traditional wicker beach chairs and an excellent seaside restaurant.

A Sporting Highlight
Each first weekend in August, endurance athletes gather here for the Ostseeman triathlon in the classic Ironman distance. The fjord and shoreline come alive with spectators and competitors alike.
Winter Retreat
The hotel remains open through winter, when it becomes an especially appealing escape – particularly for visitors from Berlin or Hamburg seeking calm. Sauna enthusiasts and book lovers can linger by the fireplace, even helping decide which cake will accompany the next afternoon coffee, before heading out for long walks along the fjord or the quiet coves of Glücksburg.
Rates
Single rooms start at €118, doubles at €159, and the spacious loft from €224 – all including the hotel’s signature breakfast.
