Villeroy & Boch The History of

Villeroy & Boch

For decades, porcelain from a house whose name stands worldwide for quality and style has graced the tables of the Vatican: Villeroy & Boch. Several Popes – from Pius XII to Benedict XVI – were provided with bespoke table services from this long-established ceramics company, often crafted from the finest bone china and adorned with the respective papal coat of arms. These exceptional services were regarded as an expression of the highest craftsmanship and esteem.

This ecclesiastical anecdote is just one of many illustrating the global prestige enjoyed by Villeroy & Boch products. Behind this approachable brand lies not an anonymous industrial corporation, but a company steeped in tradition – a family business whose history dates back to 1748.

While the Boch family steadily expanded their enterprise, Nicolas Villeroy founded his own earthenware factory in 1791. Initially competitors, both entrepreneurs nonetheless shaped the development of modern ceramic production through their ideas and innovations. In 1836, they ultimately decided to join forces. The merger of their businesses gave rise to Villeroy & Boch, which would go on to become one of Europe’s leading ceramic manufacturers.

There is, in fact, a particularly charming family anecdote from the company’s history that shows how a business partnership eventually evolved into a genuine family bond.

After Jean-François Boch and Nicolas Villeroy joined forces in 1836, their connection initially remained purely commercial. A few years later, however, it was cemented on a personal level as well.

On 3 May 1842, Eugen Boch, the son of Jean-François, married the young Octavie Villeroy. She was the daughter of Charles Villeroy and the granddaughter of co-founder Nicolas Villeroy.

Mettlach, the company’s headquarter

The most defining location in the company’s history is the former Benedictine abbey in Mettlach, in the Saarland region, which was transformed into a modern ceramics factory in the early 19th century and remains the company’s headquarters to this day. A visit to the Villeroy & Boch World comes highly recommended – it is a journey through different eras, showcasing many outstanding pieces from the company’s production.

One particular highlight is the Café La Manufacture, designed in the style of a historic Leipzig shop or dairy from 1892. This remarkable interior has been faithfully reconstructed based on historical models and represents design history at its finest. Walls, floors, columns and even the counter are entirely clad in decorative ceramic tiles.

From Mettlach, Villeroy & Boch developed into an international brand, with its tiles, tableware and bathroom products in demand worldwide,  from grand buildings to private dining tables.

Despite its global reach, however, one defining characteristic has remained: its strong family spirit.

For generations, Villeroy & Boch was managed by members of the founding families. Entrepreneurship was always about more than economic success – it also meant a sense of responsibility towards employees, the region and society as a whole.

From an early stage, members of the family were socially engaged, for instance through support programs for employees, and later through initiatives such as the construction of an SOS Children’s Village in the Saarland, driven by the von Boch family.

The Villeroy family, too, established the “Sophienstiftung” at an early stage, named after Sophie Villeroy. From the outset, the foundation’s purpose was to provide social support to those in need. It focused in particular on helping orphans and children, the sick and those requiring care, as well as elderly and vulnerable individuals.

This is one of the reasons why we were especially pleased to welcome the brand as a partner in our own, equally family-oriented Pretty Hôtels world.

It is striking how many of our member properties use Villeroy & Boch products, whether washbasins in the bathrooms or the high-quality tableware on which breakfast and dinner are served.

Welcome to the family.

Interesting fact: Even for a major global brand like Villeroy & Boch, it is no problem at all to produce a bespoke tableware set with an individual logo, whether for private households or smaller hotels. There is a dedicated department that can be contacted for this purpose.

Those interested in new bathrooms will also find themselves in excellent hands with Villeroy & Boch.

One of our favourite products, however, is La Boule. It is a sphere composed of an eight-piece table set (for two people). When tidying up, the individual components are assembled back into this porcelain sphere, and instead of putting it away in a cupboard (which would be a shame), it is placed back on the table. A design piece par excellence.
