Minturn may be a tiny historic mining town, but skiers know it well, thanks to the backcountry run known as the Minturn Mile. It leads from the top of Vail’s huge ski area, out of bounds, down to the little Western town of Minturn. Skiers usually end up at the famous Minturn Saloon over a beer or one of its legendary margaritas (or two, or three). The challenge is then to find someone in the saloon to give you a ride back to Vail and save you the taxi fare. In the old days, skiers often rode back in the bed of a local’s big pickup truck.
But that is no longer necessary, because you can now stay right in Minturn.

Marco Tonazzi, a former Italian pro skier, also skied the Minturn Mile and fell so in love with the little town that he bought a charming bed-and-breakfast, which he now runs with his wife, Amy, as a beautiful, authentic inn. The Minturn Inn has only nine rooms, all very cozy and comfortable, with that wonderful Colorado-Western charm that has all but vanished from the big, expensive hotels in neighboring Vail.
Besides, a room in Vail costs about three times as much.
Downstairs there is a small lounge with a fireplace and a little kitchen, where the innkeeper prepares breakfast and where you can make yourself a cup of tea in the afternoon.
It is this authentic, cozy atmosphere that makes the place so special. Main Street is lined with the small houses typical of an old mining town, and when you look out your window, you can feel the old spirit – it will warm your heart. You feel as if you were somewhere remote in the wilderness, yet you are right next to the glamour and glitter of Vail and Beaver Creek.
The Area
Vail is about ten minutes away by bus or car, and the luxurious resort of Beaver Creek is only 15 minutes away. With a Vail Resorts pass such as the Epic Pass, you can also ski Breckenridge (45 minutes) or Keystone (about 40 minutes) – all fantastic ski areas you should experience at least once in your life.
Dining
Breakfast is served at the large table in the lounge, with Italian espresso and homemade baked goods, of course. Because all the guests sit at one table, you can pick up the day’s insider tips right there. For lunch and dinner, head into Minturn or the neighboring villages. Dinner at the famous Minturn Saloon (a three-minute walk) is, of course, a must.
Special
The inn is also suitable for larger groups, who can book the whole house. Marco has lived in the area for more than 20 years and is happy to share insider tips or even act as your guide.
Prices
Doubles from 189 US dollars, including breakfast for two.
Getting There
Fly into Denver International Airport, then take a shuttle (about three hours) or drive (about two hours) to Vail and Minturn.
