Villa Clara Leros / Greece

Villa Clara

In the picturesque port of Agia Marina on Leros, one of the Dodecanese’s most authentic islands, stands a neoclassical 19th-century gem. Protected by the Greek archaeological authorities, the mansion was a coup de foudre for its French-Lebanese owners, who purchased it on a whim while vacationing in 2014. Now lovingly restored as Villa Clara, it continues the spirit of their earlier project in Beirut: a different setting, yet the same soulfulness.

Villa Clara Impressions. The six rooms are colorful, diverse, spacious, and full of creative ideas. Just the way we like it.

Co-creators Marie-Hélène and Olivier Goudon have poured their hearts into making this a true family affair—preserving local character while championing lived-in elegance. With a Doctorate in Business Administration and a background in marketing and luxury, Marie-Hélène shaped the concept and fine design of Villa Clara, while Olivier, once head pastry chef at Paris’s three-Michelin-starred Grand Véfour, brings his culinary mastery to the table.

the villa

Just a stone’s throw from the sea, the soft yellow walls of Villa Clara make a curious impression as you approach the street, almost magnetically pulling you inside. Despite its proximity to the main road, stepping into the mansion’s garden reveals an oasis of calm. It feels more like a private home than a hotel, where the owners and their children welcome you with warmth and generosity. Their impeccable taste is everywhere, in textiles, in design, and most notably in a thought-provoking private art collection that is far from mere decoration.

The rooms

Spanning two floors, each of the six spacious suites is unique and full of character. They retain the mansion’s original high ceilings, old wooden floors and bright, sun-drenched windows overlooking the garden. Every room features a custom hand-blown damascene chandelier; some include a cast-iron bathtub, and all are fitted with premium mattresses and crisp bedding that lull you to sleep.

At the heart of the house lies the kitchen, naturally the focal point, where the chef-owner puts his Michelin-starred skills to use, creating intricate meals with ease. Breakfast is included in every stay, yet more courses can also be prepared upon request. We had fun going through Olivier’s record collection that fills part of the room, adding to the convivial atmosphere. Across the hall, the “Diwaniya” living room is a cocoon of pastel colours, comfy sofas, rare books, and a cinema projector that turns the space into a private screening room in the evenings.

Outside, the lush Mediterranean garden is filled with herbs and fruit-bearing trees – many finding their way into the dishes served at the table.

Breakfast

Breakfast at Villa Clara is not simply breakfast – it’s a gourmet moment. Olivier prepares it each morning with creativity and care: homemade focaccia, fresh local produce, and refined touches that transform a simple ritual into a gastronomical experience. It quickly became one of the most memorable aspects of our stay.

Hospitality

What makes Villa Clara truly special is the warm presence of its owners. Together with their two children, this is a genuine family affair. Every detail is thoughtfully taken care of, from personal concierge recommendations to private sailing trips on Olivier’s boat, complete with a chic picnic on a deserted bay. Their generosity and effortless hospitality make the villa feel less like a hotel and more like a family stay – one you’ll wish to return to again and again.

The island of Leros is located between Rhodes and Kos, close to Turkey. During the day, you can travel to the beaches by bus, car, or moped. The large beaches also have small taverns where you can have lunch. However, it has a completely different vibe than Mykonos or Patmos, which is very pleasant.

The island

Leros is one of the lesser-known Dodecanese islands – quietly authentic and full of curious charm. The island is dotted with neoclassical mansions, picturesque villages, and serene beaches. Its unique character was also shaped during the Italian occupation of the early 20th century, which left behind striking examples of rationalist architecture that today stand alongside traditional Greek homes and Venetian-style villas. Agia Marina, where Villa Clara is located, is its lively heart: a harbour lined with cafés, pastel façades, and fishing boats. Just steps away lies one of Greece’s most celebrated fish restaurants, where jet-setters from neighbouring Patmos often arrive by boat to dine. Unlike its more famous neighbours, Leros has remained blissfully under the radar, making it the perfect destination for those seeking culture and tranquillity without the crowds.

Ideal for

Couples, art and architecture lovers, families, sailors, foodies, and anyone in search of a quiet, soulful escape.

Journey

Leros is accessible via ferry from Athens (approx. 8–9 hours) or best by plane with a short flight from Athens International Airport. There are also frequent ferry connections from neighbouring islands such as Kos and Patmos.
