Where are we?
In the Douro Valley in northern Portugal. Coming from Porto, you follow the N222 national road, winding alongside the river through charming old villages. The drive is beautiful. Terraced vineyards, dense forests and hardly any people line the route. After about an hour, we reach our destination: A Padaria Farmhouse in Cinfães.
This part of the region is pleasantly unspoilt. Farmers cultivate fresh citrus fruits, kiwis, cherries, grapes and berries on the surrounding hillsides. Anyone looking for peace and quiet and a break from the bustling metropolis of Porto will feel right at home here.
Maria & her B&B
A Padaria Guesthouse feels like a small oasis – thanks to its host Maria, who was born into the property itself, as her grandfather built it more than a hundred years ago. Originally used as a bakery with a large wood-fired oven, the house gradually expanded over the years to include living quarters for family members. In 2016, work began on transforming and extending it into a B&B: Maria’s uncle drew up the plans, while local craftsmen, friends and family all lent a hand. With a limited budget, plenty of love and a clear design vision, they created a place that above all respects the surroundings and the history of the property.
A spacious communal area with a kitchen, a large dining table and a lounge space by the fireplace leads to the five rooms; suites have direct access to the outside – and dogs are welcome there too.
First impressions: simple, calm, clear and spotless. No unnecessary frills, apart from fresh flowers from the garden, there is barely any decoration. Instead, cleverly positioned large windows frame views of the greenery outside, while sunlight casts soft shifting shadows throughout the house. The rooms are not even numbered: guests are meant to feel like part of the family, and the front door is almost always left open.
You will not find televisions or a swimming pool here, of course – but each room comes with a carefully curated selection of magazines and books with titles such as A Simpler Life and Slow Living. In the lounge, a CD player provides music ranging from classical to ambient and jazz. The atmosphere feels effortless yet intentional, perfectly reflecting the host’s philosophy: after studying tourism management and spending time abroad, Maria consciously chose to return home and create something of her own – stripped back to the essentials and devoted to a slower, more mindful and sustainable way of living.
Breakfast
When it comes to breakfast, Maria places great importance on local ingredients: eggs from the farm’s own chickens, homemade jams, freshly baked bread and cakes, as well as kiwis, figs and cherries grown on the property. If you are lucky, you might also get to try the wine made by Maria’s father – and from time to time, the farmhouse hosts communal dinners for guests and locals alike.
The Surroundings
You can spend hours hiking along old stone paths here without encountering many people, all while taking in stunning views of the river valley and surrounding hills. Small streams offer the perfect place for a refreshing swim on warmer days – and Maria is always happy to share her favourite routes and hidden spots.
South of the Douro, the Serra de Montemuro rises to 1,382 metres and holds thousands of years of history. Megalithic cultures left traces here up to 5,000 years ago, while Celtic communities settled in so-called castros – fortified hilltop villages made up of circular stone houses and defensive walls. Later, Roman roads and bridges connected the region, many of which still survive today. The history of Cinfães is also closely linked to the Knights Templar, who once controlled two fortresses here: Torre da Chã and Torre dos Pintos.
Dinner
The house kitchen is fully equipped for guests who wish to prepare simple meals. Within a ten-minute drive, several restaurants serve traditional Portuguese dishes, offering a taste of the local cuisine.
