It’s no secret that we love old-school quality, and Hotel Zur Wiener Staatsoper is a prime example of keeping the traditional hotel alive, something that has gotten a little lost amid the hip concepts of the next generation of hoteliers. A warm welcome from a well-dressed concierge can mean far more than a check-in terminal with a code. After all, haven’t hotels always given travelers a sense of security and comfort in an unfamiliar place?
The hotel
Our first impression: grand. You step into an 1896 Gründerzeit building in Vienna’s 1st District, just 300 meters (330 yards) from the famous State Opera, yet tucked away on a quiet side street.
What stands out is the absence of “modern” hipness. No bicycle hangs above the reception desk, but a work of art. Freshly baked cookies wait under a glass dome, the concierge wears a classic suit and the hotel director greets guests warmly.
The new owner has transformed the hotel, which once had 22 rooms, into an intimate boutique hotel with just 12 rooms and suites, one room and one suite per floor. The highlight? The neo-Baroque style, with paisley-patterned walls, herringbone parquet and modern, impeccably stylish bathrooms. In New York, only The Lowell could compete. A refuge of warm colors, tastefully designed by the British designer Nina Campbell.
Breakfast
In the morning, the international guests gather in the charming, jewel-box breakfast room. What we loved: no buffet, but a beautifully arranged tiered stand with everything your heart could desire. Add a perfect Wiener Melange, and the day is off to a great start.
Location
The hotel’s greatest asset is undoubtedly its location. Not only are the State Opera and the iconic Hotel Sacher practically on your doorstep, but so are the charming shops and bars of Vienna’s historic center.
Just around the corner is Knize, one of the city’s most traditional tailors, as well as the legendary Loos Bar, an intimate hangout for generations, and the iconic Zum Schwarzen Kameel, an absolute must on any visit to Vienna. We also recommend a walk to the beloved Café Prückel and a concert at the world-famous Musikverein.
Everything is just a short, easy walk away.
