The Alpenlofts in Bad Gastein are – like those other pretty places, Haus Hirt and Miramonte – a project of Evelyn and Ike Ikrath. Six chalets now stand on the hillside, and the fact that the Ikraths live in one of them themselves says it all: these chalets must be cozy!
But let’s get straight to the facts:
The Alpenlofts were built in the summer of 2014 on the sunny, south-facing slope above Haus Hirt. There are six chalets in all, each on two floors. The clever design allows each loft to be divided into two units without the parties getting in each other’s way. The best part is usually the upper floor, with a perfect view of the valley.
And we have to admit: we have rarely felt so comfortable so quickly (we tested the Tessa loft, the highest on the slope). That is partly due to the elevated location and partly to the timber construction. After a few steps, you find yourself padding barefoot through the loft, wishing you could stay longer than planned.
Because each chalet was sold to a different private owner, each owner chose their own art and furnishings, so no two lofts are alike. There is something for every taste – but after seeing them all, we still liked the understated, serene Tessa loft best.
Ideal for
Families, individualists, creative types, architects and lovers of beautiful buildings who want a relaxing, inspiring stay in the mountains. Bad Gastein is worth a visit in summer and winter alike.
Features
All the chalets have at least two bedrooms and a modern kitchen with Miele appliances and tableware by the classic Finnish brand Iittala. The generous living areas feature chairs by Charles and Ray Eames, lamps by Josef Frank and Loewe televisions: only the best will do.
Price
Lofts start at about 350 euros a night – for example, the upper floor of the Tessa loft, with two bedrooms for four people.
