Lake Kaltern lies just south of Bolzano, surrounded by the breathtaking mountain scenery of South Tyrol. What makes this little village so special is its beautiful bathing lake, tucked away among vineyards and, thankfully, still untouched by mass tourism. Just above the village, off the famous wine route, you’ll find the hidden retreat known as Das Wanda.
From the very first moment, the atmosphere feels different. A young host welcomes you warmly, offering a chilled glass of local wine before inviting you to settle into the lounge or out onto the terrace, where the sun sparkles in your glass. As you take in the stunning views of the South Tyrolean mountains, either Verena – the boss, or her sister Claudia join you to share a few details about the property and the rooms. Within minutes, you feel completely at ease, slipping effortlessly into holiday mode.
The Hotel
“The Wanda” used to be a typical guesthouse. Verena and her family, who own a hotel a few hundred metres away, gut the thing completely and turned it into a real “feel good place”. On the ground floor there is a wonderful lounge and bar, in the basement you find a completely new wellness area and on top twelve modestly designed suites.
New
A recent extension introduced six additional apartments in a separate annex right beside the main building, overlooking the spacious park. There’s also a newly built pool with panoramic views across the South Tyrolean lowlands. Guests can unwind on comfortable loungers, sink into cozy armchairs, or simply relax on the lawn. The entire space feels peaceful, harmonious, and wonderfully inviting. And always enjoy the palm trees, this is so wonderful.

Ideal for
Das Wanda is an adults only place (in the apartments though, children are allowed from the age of 14+), so it`s perfect for couples, who can really appreciate such small escapes. You can discover this place for yourself and theoretically come back year after year and turn it into your second home.
The new Pool
One of the truly outstanding highlights is the newly built infinity pool. in the morning, the sun rises behind the wineyards and the garden and between palm trees and plants you can go for a swim and have a coffee in one of the lounge chairs. Out of this world.
Wellness
The wellness area has been completely redesigned and now includes a beautiful sauna overlooking the indoor pool and surrounding vineyards. Treatments are available on request, but this is far from a clinical spa resort – the focus here is on relaxation and understated comfort.
Surroundings
Lake Kaltern is only about ten minutes away by car or e-bike, making it perfect for a day by the water. Beyond that, countless hiking trails and mountain excursions begin practically at the hotel’s doorstep.
Culinary
Currently, the culinary offering centres around an excellent breakfast served at the table, featuring fresh and healthy regional products. In the evenings, the bar opens for guests, serving not only local wines but also expertly mixed drinks. Verena is always happy to recommend nearby restaurants. One favourite is Siegi’s, just 1.1 kilometres from the hotel – a charming family-run restaurant where the father serves and the son cooks. Small, warm, and authentic, it’s exactly the kind of place that makes you want to come back every evening. Guests can also dine at Verena’s parents’ hotel – www.designhotel-panorama.com.
Rates
Double rooms start from €110 per person per night. The most beautiful rooms – the “South-East Suites” – cost €155 per person including breakfast. The new apartments are available from €130 per person per day and they are open all year round.
