The Tegernsee is well known to most people in Germany. From Munich it is only a 45 minutes drive to the south. In summer the guests come for hiking and swimming, in winter for wellness, skiing and to enjoy a well-deserved time-out. In Germany, the Tegernsee is a monument. It`s the Palm Beach of Bavaria!
Rottach-Egern lies in the very south of the lake. And it`s very pretty itself: Picturesque mountain scenery, prominent residents (Michael Gorbatschow for example), beautiful houses and farms, a three-star chef (Christian Jürgens) and a fantastic hotel: The Haltmair am See. The clou: The addition “am See – at the lake” is not just a phrase here. It is located directly on the shore of the lake. Thus not completely directly. In between there is a thin road.
The Haltmair am See is no ordinary hotel, but consists of several highlights. The most important detail: one immediately feels at home here. Everything is very personal. Jenny and Andreas Eham, who run the house in the fourth generation, take care of their guests in a very charming way.
The second detail: The Haltmair am See is not one of these all-inclusive-220-Euro-per-person-and-night hotels. No. It`s an Inn. A guesthouse, where breakfast is served in the morning. The atmosphere is more relaxed for the guests who want to explore the culinary variety of Rottach-Egern in the evening – or who can prepare a little something for themselves in their own apartment.
In the main house there are 40 rooms, all of which are very comfortably furnished. The front rooms have a direct view of the lake. And from the back rooms – no less beautiful – you see the huge garden and of course the beautiful mountain scenery. Some rooms are located in smaller huts behind the house and have a small kitchenette. There is also a small terrace with deck chair and dining table. Wonderful.
Culinary
Although only breakfast is served at the Hotel Haltmair, there has been a culinary extension since 2017: Together with chef Alois “Lois” Neuschmid, the Eham family has taken over a restaurant directly below the Hotel am See. At the “Haubentaucher”, Lois conjures grandiose creations from the small kitchen of this beach bistro. After all, he learned from Hans Haas at the Tantris in Munich (one of the best chefs in Europe). That’s why you have to make a reservation for a dinner.
Wellness
In the basement of the hotel there is a nice swimming pool and a spacious, very clean wellness area with saunas, steam bath and relaxation room. The hotel also offers treatments and massages. The wellness area is also free of charge for the residents of the chalets and apartments.

Ideal for
Anyone looking for a time-out in the Bavarian mountains. And those who don’t need the spectacular four-thousand-metre peaks in France, but feel at home in a well-kept village like Rottach-Egern. For families with children there are fantastic hikes and huts.
