Hotel Flora Venice / italy

For years, we have heard about Hotel Flora described as a jewel-like guesthouse that is as charming as is accessible, while right in the heart of Venice. So we arrived curious to discover this landmark that proves a simple truth: when hospitality is a family business across generations, it becomes less of a service than a way of life.

The building

Set within a 17th-century Venetian residence the hotel belongs to a disappearing category of places that once defined travel in Italy: the refined yet informal “pensione”. Across three generations, the Romanelli family has cared for this small palazzo with quiet devotion and respect to its history since 1965.

The patina of time is prevalent from the moment you enter. Resembling an old-world home, wood panelling, antique furnishings, and patterned textiles set a warm tone. Just beyond reception, a verdant garden appears, as improbable as it is joyful; secluded amongst antique sculptures, patio seating and climbing ivy.

Hotel Flora Venezia: A lot of patina mixes with a house full of stories and charm.

The Rooms

The forty rooms over three floors reflect the property’s charming architectural irregularities: corridors bend, ceilings vary, and bathrooms sizes differ in proportion (some small with showers, some larger with a bathtub). Comfort, however, remains consistent – Falomo mattresses, fine linens, and carefully chosen Italian bath products. We loved the antique beds, damask wall tapestry and Murano glass chandeliers, each carrying a quiet romance of the past.

Room views shift between the internal garden, neighbouring courtyards, and – from the upper levels – the layered rooftops of Venice. (Rooms facing ground level trade privacy for proximity to the garden’s calm).

Lobby, guest room and colourful furniture: Venice unplugged.

Social

The living room is the hotel’s social heart – a space where guests linger over books, answer a few emails, or gather for afternoon tea. During our stay, news had just broken of the passing of beloved Italian singer Ornella Vanoni, and her voice drifted through the room on vinyl. (It is in such quiet gestures that a sense of belonging takes root).

The petite bar at Flora readily produces an evening cocktail – often all one needs after a day getting lost in the streets of Venice.

Breakfast

When the weather allows, breakfast is enjoyed in the charming garden; alternatively, it is served in the velvety living room indoors. Seasonal fruit, yoghurt, fresh croissants, baked breads, and homemade spreads form the foundation, with the option to add on cooked dishes (such as perfectly prepared eggs).

Hosts & Services

Staying at Flora means there is a strong chance of meeting the owners themselves. Husband and wife Gioele and Heiby remain personally and hands-on involved in the daily life of the hotel. Together, they have cultivated a style of hospitality that feels attentive and entirely unpretentious – as though welcoming an old friend into their home. Many members of the staff have worked here for years, a continuity reflected in the genuinely warm service.

Guests seeking a more nuanced approach to organizing activities and meals are in particularly good hands. The family also runs its own editorial project, “Inside Venice” – a digital platform that explores the city through stories, encounters, and collaborations with local creatives.

A Family Continuum

Over the years, the Romanelli family has expanded, introducing Casa Flora, a two-bedroom modern apartment, and Novecento – a nine-room boutique stay distinguished by its oriental-inspired design – both in the near vicinity of Hotel Flora.

Does it get any better than a visit to Venice? No.

Location

Just minutes from Piazza San Marco, Hotel Flora is a hideout down a narrow calle that shifts the tempo. Despite this central position, the hotel remains remarkably peaceful thanks to the cul-de-sac devoid from passing traffic. Attractions such as the Grand Canal, Teatro La Fenice, the Accademia, and Santa Maria della Salute are all walking distance.

Getting There

The closest vaporetto (water bus) stops are Santa Maria del Giglio or San Marco Vallaresso, both within a five-minute walk.

From Venice Marco Polo Airport, the most scenic (and pricey) arrival is via water taxi, which reaches the area in approximately 30–40 minutes. Alternatively, the Alilaguna airport boat connects the airport to San Marco in about one hour.

Ideal For

Bohemian lovers seeking down-to-earth old-world charm and quiet intimacy.
