In 1991, the Viennese entrepreneur Otto E. Wiesenthal found a late-19th-century townhouse in Vienna’s 7th district and fulfilled his dream of opening his own hotel. He did not want an ordinary hotel, but a meeting place where you could spend the night in style and soak up a generous dose of Viennese charm, and, above all, a place to show his growing art collection.
He opened with 24 rooms and began a second career as a hotelier. By expanding into the interconnected neighboring buildings, the Altstadt Vienna has since grown to 62 rooms and suites, yet it has remained a jewel box of a boutique hotel, whose corridors and nooks keep revealing new perspectives, above all cultural ones.
Wiesenthal and his daughter Saskia, who also works at the hotel, are passionate about art, as you can see from the entrance and the staircases up to the reception, which are filled with colorful works. In 2006, the architect Matteo Thun redesigned an entire wing with eight rooms and a suite. Later, the Viennese design duo Polka and the fashion designer Lena Hoschek, among others, were invited to create their own versions of a Viennese hotel room. Every room is different, yet they all share a certain coziness and an authentic Viennese atmosphere.
In the end, every guest gets to decide which refuge feels most like home. Families can book connecting rooms, and for longer stays, some suites come with their own small kitchen.

The Altstadt Vienna claims to have the friendliest staff in Vienna, and it is true. Many guests feel at home after their very first stay.

Breakfast is served in a lovely room at beautifully set tables. Besides the generous buffet and the classic Viennese coffee specialties, you can also order dishes on request.
Surroundings
The hotel is in the Neubau district, near the Spittelberg quarter, one of our absolute favorite parts of Vienna, where everything still feels very authentic. Many lovely little places are within walking distance (the staff will happily recommend some), the MuseumsQuartier and the Hofburg are close by, and the city center is only ten to fifteen minutes away on foot.
