The only way is up! Follow that sign and you will reach Der Taxhof, a collection of charming chalets around a historic farmhouse on a mountainside at about 1,000 meters (3,300 feet). Vacation mode kicks in the moment you arrive, because this 500-year-old place is special. Add the fresh mountain air and the spectacular view of the snowcapped Kitzsteinhorn, at 3,203 meters (10,500 feet), and you realize this is not a hotel. It is an oasis.
The sisters Katharina and Elisabeth took over the family-owned Taxhof in 2010. They greet every guest personally, give a quick tour and then show you to one of the beautiful chalets or apartments. It is back to basics without roughing it, a vacation from tourism: nothing here is staged, everything is authentic. And since the sisters have children of their own, they understand what little ones love.
Keep in mind that the Taxhof is a real working farm, run by the same family since 1687. Its permanent residents include cows, sheep, goats, donkeys, ponies, chickens, quail, rabbits and cats.
THE APARTMENTS
The Taxhof rents seven apartments and chalets in all. In the historic main house are two vacation apartments, Schenkammerl (46 square meters) and Dachbodn (90 square meters); the special feature of the Dachbodn suite is its glass roof, so you fall asleep under the stars. In a separate house just above the main house are the apartments Toni (84 square meters, for four to six people) and Nanni (47 square meters, for two or three), which can be connected. The dreamy Troadkostn, an old wooden granary, has 35 square meters and a private terrace, perfect for a couple. Then there are the architecturally elegant newer buildings set into the slope: the Hoistodl suite for two or three, and the spacious, more modern Treehouse suite (55 square meters) for two or three.
CULINARY
The historic main house has two cozy parlors (and a wonderful sun terrace), where dinner is served three evenings a week. The sisters’ motto, in local dialect: “Oafoch, ehrlich und guat” (simple, honest and good). They use mainly seasonal products, many from their own farm.
On other evenings, you are welcome to spend time there, too: the sisters have set up an honesty bar and came up with a clever service of precooked healthy meals, portioned for your group, that you simply warm up for a wonderful dinner. The right wine is available in the main house, too.

WELLNESS
The Dachbodn suite, the Toni and Nanni apartments, the Treehouse suite and the Hoistodl suite each have a private sauna. Otherwise, the vast wellness area of the Pinzgau mountains is free to use every day and highly recommended.
IDEAL FOR
Families, with or without children, who appreciate the simple life in the mountains, like to hike by day and want peace, quiet and good, healthy food in the evening. The Troadkostn is also an excellent, affordable refuge for young couples who love mountain vacations.
Prices
The smaller apartments and the Troadkostn from 150 euros per night, all others from 225 euros. Small surcharges apply for short stays or additional guests. Breakfast and dinner cost extra.
