A farm stay hideaway is a small place on a real, working farm. Think olive groves, bees, sheep or a vegetable garden – and whatever grows there ends up on your plate in the evening. Here are our five favourites, from the Allgäu to the countryside north of Rome, Tuscany, Pantelleria and Lake Garda. And don’t worry: there’s plenty of comfort along the way.
A narrow road winds up the hill, meadows to the left and right, and at the top sits a farmhouse more than 200 years old with a bright red façade. This is where Veronika and Christian run their wonderful “Hof der Möglichkeiten” – the farm of possibilities. The Rosso. Three loft apartments in the old hay barn, with kitchenettes, reclaimed wood and plenty of wabi-sabi calm. The garden has fruit trees, chickens, bees and a natural pond to jump into, and for rainy days there’s a sauna and a studio with a fireplace. Everything is beautifully styled, and if you love pizza: there’s even a proper Italian pizza oven in the garden, with the dough waiting for you in the farm shop. The Allgäu Alps are only 25 minutes away by car, but honestly, once you’re up here you won’t want to leave in a hurry.

First a watchtower, then a barn, then a hayloft: this 18th-century house in the hills of Tuscia has seen a thing or two. Today it belongs to Milan-born Beatrice Peruzzi, and staying with her feels more like visiting a very stylish friend than checking into a hotel – antiques, embroidered linen napkins and a crackling fire included. All around stand ancient olive trees whose oil is so good it’s sold all the way to Milan, and in autumn you’re welcome to help with the harvest. Fair warning: Bea’s horses sometimes wander into the garden that’s meant for guests – that’s simply life on the farm. In the evening, on request, there’s homemade pasta, wild herbs and eggs from the farm’s own hens, with a home-brewed gin and tonic by the pool beforehand.

Red wine, golden sunsets, vineyards all the way to the horizon: Follonico, between Montepulciano and Pienza, is pretty much the Tuscany you have in your head. Suzanna and Fabio rescued this 18th-century farmhouse from ruin and call their philosophy “Slow-Sophy”. There are six very stylish suites – none of them a showroom, but real historic rooms with fireplaces and beautiful fabrics. The organic breakfast brings sourdough bread, honey from their own bees and homemade jam to the table, and in the evening guests often end up cooking together.

Black lava stone, capers, rosemary – and on a clear day you can see Tunisia: Pantelleria is unlike any other Italian island. On its west coast, Margot and Massimiliano have brought back to life the dammusi that his father, the artist Filippo Panseca, built in the 1970s. The place is half guesthouse, half artist residency, which is why there’s art everywhere, even on the rooftops. The kitchen cooks with everything their own farms on Pantelleria and in Salemi produce, and right next door lie stone structures some 5,000 years old. The kids stay at home – this one is adults only.

Behind an iron gate above Salò, chickens roam the garden while guests sip their aperitivo with a view of the lake – between grapevines and a herb garden. Angelica Galeazzi has turned the old country estate, some 150 metres above Salò, into a thoroughly charming retreat. There are eight apartments and three rooms, almost all with lake views, and with cushions and fabrics hand-embroidered by her mother. In the morning there are freshly made eggs and fruit from the estate’s own farm, in the afternoon it’s off to the pool overlooking the bay. If you fancy it, an Italian mamma will teach you how to make ravioli, after a guided herb walk through the woods; the next day there’s a watercolour painting workshop. L’Angelica Corte Palazzina shows that Lake Garda can do a different kind of holiday, too. For couples, solo travellers and families alike, it’s a real find.
