The most important question first: where exactly are the Cape Verde Islands? Most people have heard of them, but few could find them on a map. Yet the location is Spinguera’s great advantage: the islands lie in the Atlantic, some 350 miles (570 kilometers) off the coast of West Africa. Even Brazil is only a few hours away by plane, and from Europe, direct flights to Boa Vista take about six hours.
Be aware, though, that the Spinguera Ecolodge is a special place. It harks back to the original idea of travel: a simple vacation in natural-stone houses just a few hundred meters from the ocean.
Everything here is natural, from the spirit of the place to the interiors. The owner, Larissa Lazzari, installed a solar power system that covers all of the lodge’s energy needs.
The lodge has just nine guest rooms, all lovingly furnished, with nice small details, mosquito nets and ocean views. There are also three somewhat more luxurious villas.
Down by the sea, small straw-shaded sun decks await, the perfect spot for a good book.
Culinary
The lodge has a beautiful, very authentic restaurant overlooking the ocean. Since Larissa is from Italy, the menu blends Mediterranean and African cooking. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served daily, and if you want to eat out, there are a few restaurants and bars within a 20-minute drive.

Adventurous travelers and creative couples looking for an authentic vacation on a remote island. Many guests simply enjoy the lodge and its seclusion, but you can also explore the island; the lodge organizes excursions, so just ask when you book.
Best time to visit
November and December are the best months, with plenty of sun on the beach, followed by April to July. January to March is the windy season.
Activities
Many guests spend their days at the lodge, enjoying the sun, the nature and the sea. But you can also explore the island by rental car, book kitesurfing lessons or go hiking, with or without a guide.

Doubles from about 200 euros, including breakfast. Half board can be booked in advance.
Location & journey
Spinguera is on the island of Boa Vista. Flights from various international airports land at Aristides Pereira International Airport near Rabil, about a 35-minute drive from the lodge.
