In 2019, Carmen and Klaus Alber, the hosts of the renowned Miramonti Boutique Hotel above Merano, bought the Merano villa of Monocle founder Tyler Brûlé and turned it into the perfect vacation home. The great thing about this property: Brûlé left them not only the beautiful house but also its entire interior, including a magnificent art collection. Think of it as staying in a living art gallery, and in Merano’s most beautiful neighborhood, no less: Obermais, where the aristocracy already spent their summers in the 19th century. Add palm trees and pine groves, mountain views and a large garden, and you are in for a treat.
The second highlight: guests at Villa Fluggi have access to the huge spa at the Miramonti Boutique Hotel in Hafling, about 12 minutes up the mountain by car. It has a heated outdoor infinity pool, a Japanese onsen pool, a panoramic forest sauna, a steam bath, a gym and spaces for yoga and meditation. Or never leave the villa at all and book the hotel’s services instead, such as your own chef or breakfast.
The Villa
The house has three floors, five bedrooms and three bathrooms, so Villa Fluggi can sleep up to 10 people. Since it used to be divided into three separate apartments, the floors are linked only by the stairwell, which means grandparents, parents and children all get plenty of peace and quiet and space to themselves. There are also two living rooms, a study and a stylish, beautifully furnished children’s room.
Fans of retro design in particular will fall in love with the house. Alongside classics such as the Thonet chairs in the dining room, mid-century design gems are scattered throughout the villa.
