Let’s head straight to the South Tyrolean spa town of Merano, which has changed a lot in recent years. There are lots of new restaurants and shops and, above all, places like the Ottmanngut. It is a real gem not only in Merano but in the entire Alpine region, one of the most beautiful, authentic and charming hotels there is.
The Rooms
In a tranquil corner below its own vineyard, the Kirchlechner family has created a magical place with simple means and an unfussy renovation. The 11 rooms are bright and full of antiques, and the original orangery looks like a set from a 1920s film. But everyone falls in love with the sunny garden, with its lemon trees and cypresses, where breakfast is served in summer and guests linger over a glass of wine in the evening.
Culinary
Once a week, every Thursday, there is a communal dinner, in the garden when the weather is fine, where house guests and locals mingle for a wonderful evening. The host himself, Martin Kirchlechner, is in the kitchen. You will not be disappointed.
The whole team is passionate about slow food: baking bread, making jam and using lots of local ingredients. The sourdough bread is a science unto itself and contains no added yeast. Instead of the usual buffet, breakfast is served as a menu every morning: freshly squeezed juices and Italian espresso, omelets, Bircher muesli with berries, homemade sourdough bread and jams. Everything is regional, organic and extremely good.
The Region
Merano is the perfect base for a great mix of mountain vacation and urban flair. Enjoy the magnificent breakfast, take a trip into the nearby mountains (the team has all the tips, just ask), then go shopping in the old town. We also recommend dinner at Meteo, another at 1477 Reichhalter and one at Gasthof Zur Blauen Traube, so you will need at least four nights at the Ottmanngut.
